McLaren Racing Points Finger at Rival Drivers for Piastri-Norris Collision

Tire detaches from McLaren after contact between Piastri and Norris

One tire detaches from the car of Lando Norris after he crashed into team-mate Piastri at the beginning of the US GP short race.

McLaren Formula 1 leaders Zak Brown and Andrea Stella attributed competitors for the crash between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the US GP sprint race.

The Australian driver, leading his teammate in the championship by 22 points, bounced into his team-mate after making contact with the Hulkenberg.

The crash took both team drivers from the event, along with the Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.

McLaren Leaders Express Disappointment Over Incident

Zak Brown, the team's CEO, commented to broadcasters that some of the driving at the start was "inexperienced", remarking: "Clearly Hulkenberg hit Piastri and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella commented: "The reaction is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the possibility to race."

"It is unexpected that some drivers with a lot of experience don't act with necessary care. Go to the first corner, make sure you don't damage competitors and carry on."

The team indicated that Stella was referring to both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.

Contrasting Views on the Incident

Nevertheless, former champion Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed the Australian had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the first corner of an F1 race when he chose to cut back to try to overtake his teammate.

Piastri had a stronger launch than Norris and initially competed on the outside on the ascending approach to the turn.

But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to hit the Sauber driver.

Racer Comments After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what happened, I attempted to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Lando. A shame."

His teammate commented: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Behind us events unfolded and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers behind just being a bit careless and we are the result of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the middle."

Hulkenberg, who had qualified a season-best fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just messy."

"Oscar steered inward pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and way out of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Piastri steered inward and the collision was inevitable."

Aftermath and Team Response

The team will analyze the incident with their drivers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

Stella said: "Overall displeased but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."

"We are in a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to compete, race normally and utilize our performance."

"The points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A little more care would be good for all involved."

Standings Impact

The race was taken by Red Bull's Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the standings - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and 33 behind of Norris.

Stella said: "The implication is what the maths says - we missed out on eight championship points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two skilled racers. We anticipate just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the championship race by race.
