Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
