Minister Confirms MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in any cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a issue in every modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

The broader defence situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, including transport use to communication habits.
