In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
