The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits The Beloved Duo Against a Tablet Computer
It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang
The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the teaser avoids is why Woody is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Last Installment
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge pinned to her outfit.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
