The New Mayor Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in First Speech
On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an bold commencement to his term.

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
